B-29の来襲だ、けたたましいサイレンが鳴り響くと、「雷電」が強制冷却ファンをキーンと響かせながら飛び立って行く。熊ん蜂のような飛行姿勢と、ずんぐりむっくりスタイルで食らいついてくる精悍さは、米軍爆撃部隊の脅威だった。 　「雷電」は、日本海軍が、上昇力と火力とスピードを重視した戦闘機として、「零戦」の設計チームである堀越二郎技師が主務者として担当した迎撃用の戦闘機である。 　戦闘機としては異様に直径の大きい「火星１３型」を採用し、抵抗減少のため、胴体の中央部を最大太さとし、延長軸と強制冷却ファンにより機首を流線型に絞って、全体を紡錐形とした 「雷電」特有のスタイルとなった。 　しかし、エンジンとプロペラの振動など、多くのトラブルにより実用化が遅れ、速い着陸速度と太い胴体による視界不良は、零戦などに慣れた日本人パイロットから敬遠されてしまった。 　敗戦間際B-29が来襲すると、優れた上昇力と高空性能そして強力な火力をもつ 「雷電」の真価が改めて見直されることになった。　いまこそ出番だ
